I done did it… August 9, 2007

It’s done. I gave my notice. Four weeks of it – two weeks more than the obligatory two. And I told my work colleagues, who were all most excited for me. Now I just have to tie the loose ends together and board that plane in six weeks.

I’m in the same position as you. 24 years of age. Working as a financial analyst in London and bored stiff. Planning on going to do a TEFL course in Barcelona, starting on October 1st. Wondering if it’s all worth it or if I’ve made a mistake. Can you make a career out of teaching english? Will employers look upon my Spanish experience favourably if I decide to come back to England?

I don’t know, but let me know how it goes anyway. I’ll be reading up on your progress.

Godspeed.

Hey mk,

Thanks for posting a comment. Wow, someone reads this!

Just dive in the deep end… Who really wants to be bored to death in an office at 24? I know I don’t. I’m sure you will still be favourably looked upon if you head back to England. And, hey, you’re at least going to be a little closer to home than me.

Good luck.

Mk,

I stumbled across this blog while trying to look for jobs in Spain. I actually leave for Madrid in a week–I am going to the Canterbury English School as well. I’m 25 and lived in Italy for a year during college, and have always wanted to go back to Europe. Let’s hope it all works out well.

You’re right of course, Luke – sometimes you just have to run on instinct. “Better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all,” and all that.

All the best Rick – I’m sure if you go in with the right attitude, you’ll ace it.

Looking forward to living in Barcelona and checking out the music scene too.

Peace.

Hi there Luke,

I’m planning to enrol for the same course that you mention in the next few days – Canterbury TEFL on September 24th. Really looking forward to it. What are your accommodation plans?

Hey there,

I also just stumbled across this blog while looking at programs/jobs in Madrid. I’m leaving in three weeks for Spain to attend Canterbury English School as well. I’m 26, just finished graduate school, and I couldn’t bring myself to settle into a teaching job here (Chicago/U.S.) just yet. This might be a mistake, but it’s one I’m looking forward to.

Good luck everyone..I hope to meet some of you soon!

Hi Peter, Sara,

I can’t believe how many people stumble across this looking for Canterbury.

Accommodation plans – ummm… yeah. At the moment I’m booked into Naranco, which is on Calle de Puebla, for 10 nights once I get to Spain. It’s a whole lot cheaper than any of the backpackers and just around the corner from Canterbury. I know no one there so I can’t really rely on friends or fam. This blog has brought me a couple of offers which I may look into. I’m happy to talk about accommodation with anyone who might have an offer of share housing, a flat, a house for real cheap, or a mattress under a roof, possibly even no mattress if I don’t get any other offers.

I suspect I’ll meet you guys in three weeks! I arrive on the 19th Sept.. if anyone’s around then.

Hey Luke.

Congrats! You lucky, lucky…

Hello again,

I’m arriving on the 20th in the afternoon. I booked a week’s stay at a hostel called Los Alpes, which isn’t too far from Canterbury (I think..). I’m also going to be looking for a room in a shared flat, etc. I actually met a really cool girl from Madrid this summer who lives in the Lavapies barrio (the one and only person I know in Spain). She offered to help me look for a place when I get there, and you are both welcome to join in the search!
